History of Omega watches
Omega watches have a rich history that spans decades. The brand was founded in 1848 by Swiss watchmaker, Louis Brandt. At this time, the company was better known as La Generale Watch Co. and focused its efforts on sourcing parts in order to produce luxury timepieces for the English, Italian and Scandanavian markets.
Following the death of the founder in 1879, his two sons took over the business and implemented a number of changes which brought the brand more in line with what we see today. The first of these changes was the development of the company’s own in-house manufacturing process. It was this new way of doing things that birthed a self-produced timepiece which went by the name Omega. The watch went on to become a great success, so much so that the Omega brand was established as its own entity.
For here, the brand went from strength to strength, and enjoyed a triumphant first half to the 20th Century. Its admirable position during this period welcomed a number of mergers and acquisitions, with the most notable being an alliance with Tissot and Lemania to form the Société Suisse pour l'Industrie Horlogère (SSIH). Combined, the group became a force to be reckoned with in Swiss luxury watchmaking, and even began outselling the likes of Rolex among other renowned names in the field.
It was during this time that Omega also established many of its partnerships and associations in the world of sport, science and popular culture. For example, in 1932, Omega became the official timekeeper of the Olympic Games. The 1960s saw the brand’s advanced Speedmaster model become the first Omega watch to be worn in space, and was later endorsed by NASA and the likes of Buzz Aldrin during the Apollo 11 mission.
1995 was the year GoldenEye was released, marking the start of the brands relationship with the special agent character and film franchise, which is still going strong today.
