Bamboo, banana, and coconut leaves- from the Caribbean to Indonesia, passing through Madagascar- the weaving of these leaves is a true art of basketry. This ancestral craft, requiring only fresh leaves and great dexterity, is used daily to make baskets, trays, hats, fences, and decorations. Daum’s creative workshop explores this tradition by adapting it to the modeling technique. Strips of clay have been woven and then reshaped into vases and bowls. Leaves of different types intertwine and blend, still fresh and slender, forming baskets to hold cut flowers or freshly picked fruits. To evoke the exoticism of the islands where weaving remains a living practice, vanilla flowers come to decorate and perfect these works of patience and beauty.
