A Must-See Golf Tournament of the Year
The beginning of July marks the start of one of the most exciting sporting fixtures of the year; The Scottish Open, a Rolex Series Event. Our involvement with the tournament began in 2011, when we were first commissioned to design and make the official trophy. Since then, we have maintained and engraved the magnificent 12” quaich, as well as make the yearly winner’s replica, a smaller version of the official trophy itself.
The Renaissance Club
Held for the past four years by one of our partners, the exclusive Renaissance Club, we were delighted by the announcement following the 2022 Scottish Open that the Renaissance club will continue to host the event until 2026.
Nestled between Archerfield estate and the iconic Muirfield, the Renaissance Club takes pride of place along the historic golfing coastline which stretches between Edinburgh to North Berwick, a staggering stretch which boasts 22 golf clubs across 30 miles.
Crafting The Trophy and Winner's Replica
The dramatic coastal scenery provides the perfect backdrop to the now titled Genesis Scottish Open trophy, which is striking yet simplistic in its appearance. Based on a 12” traditional Scottish Quaich, or drinking vessel (a historic symbol of Scottish welcome and hospitality), the trophy’s hammered bowl and stunning gilt interior are visible through a painstakingly hand-pierced lid, which portrays an intricate floral design, paying homage to the national flower of Scotland, the thistle. Although slightly smaller, crafted from a 10 inch diameter base, the winner’s replica echoes these design features.
Each year, the replica is created in our workshops above our showroom on George Street, Edinburgh, and has become one of the milestone achievements in an apprentice’s career. Our Master silversmith creates the piece with either an apprentice or trainee, as the breadth of technical skills required provides the perfect training stimulus. Whether it is the hammered, or ‘planished’ surface of the quaich, which requires years of practice to create consistently even marks, or the intricate piercing work found on the lid, the trophy passes through the team’s hands with a care and reverence befitting of the tournament.
After four days of intense competition, the trophy is awarded on the last day of the Scottish Open, on the 18th green. The trophy then travels back to our workshops to be hand engraved by our award-winning engraver, Dario Batzella, before it is lovingly polished by our Master Polisher, Colin Golder. Following last year's spectacular win by world 6th Xander Schauffele, we look forward to seeing who will lift the trophy in 2023.
Working on the trophy a mere 30 miles from where the event is played creates a real buzz at 87 George Street, securing this tournament as one of the key highlights in our calendar. This year, the event will take place between the 13th – 16th July, and promises to be another fantastic tournament.
