A Rich Pedigree Delivering Fast Paced Action
Existing in its present form since 1963, the Scottish Motor Racing Club organises and runs several Championships throughout the year, mainly at Knockhill Racing Circuit in Fife. The Club is beloved of many prominent figures in Scottish racing, including Sir Jackie Stewart, Paul Di Resta, Dario Franchitti, David Coulthard and more. Find out about some of the exceptional pieces we have been involved in over the years below.
The Hamilton & Inches Trophy
The Hamilton & Inches Trophy was commissioned by the late John Romanes, in memory of his mother who had recently passed away. It was presented to the Scottish Motor Racing Club to be given as an annual award. The silver trophy, presented on wooden plinth, features the winner's names of The Hamilton & Inches Championship for Modified Sports Cars.
The Jock McBain Trophy
Jock McBain was the Ford dealer in Chirnside near Duns, where Jim Clark was born, and the founder of the Border Reivers Racing Team. Despite initial success as a racing driver, sadly, the war and RAF service intervened in his driving career, however he was a prominent figure in the sport during the rise of 500cc racing in England and putting Scotland's name on the map.
Along with his fellow Border pals, mostly farmers, he supplied several cars for Jim Clark to race in his early career and without Jock’s support Jim would never have achieved such greatness.
In 1975, the trophy was won by at Ingliston by a rapid Irish driver, Patsy McGarrity, and he took it home and put it on display in his Belfast shop. During the times of the troubles, the shop was blown up by terrorists and the dent visible on the top of the trophy is the lasting damage caused by the incident.
Sir Jackie Stewart Medal
The Sir Jackie Stewart Medal was one of 10 originally crafted in 2003 with a donation from Jackie Stewart, now Sir Jackie, and who is still the Patron of the Scottish Motor Racing Club. He took over as President in 1968 after the death of Jim Clark for 37 years and became the Honorary Patron in 2005. This particular medal was awarded in 2011 to Kevin Pick, a long serving and still current member of the Club’s committee.
The medal sits in a box lined with the Racing Stewart Tartan commissioned for the family.
Geoff Waugh Medal
Geoff Waugh was a dentist who raced several cars back in the early 1960s. He became Clerk of the Course at Ingliston in the late 60s and when he died, very young his family commissioned the making of a series of silver medals by us which the Scottish Motor Racing Club presented for over 20 years.
In 2003 this medal was replaced with a new one which was commissioned by Sir Jackie Stewart and uses the same die for the reverse side as the Geoff Waugh Medal to continue its legacy. The medal is presented for ‘Service to Scottish Motorsport’.
